“이 책은 정서영 작가가 90년대 말부터 2012년 최근까지 해온 작품과 전시들을 집성한 책이다. 작가는 90년대에 조각, 드로잉 작업을 해오다가 지난 몇 해 동안에는 퍼포먼스, 사운드 설치 등 다양하게 확장된 방식으로 작업해오고 있으며, 90년대 후반 이후 지금까지 한국 미술계에서 소위 ‘동시대 미술’로의 변화의 징후를 선두에서 보여준 작가이다. 이 책은 지난 10여년 간의 작업을 살피면서 주목할 차원들을 되짚고 재생해내고자 하는 의도로 시작되었다. 또한 이번 기획은 2006년 이후로 1인 작가 프로덕션 방식으로 전시나 퍼포먼스 등을 진행했던 필자의 큐레토리얼 프로젝트의 일환으로, 이번에는 정서영 작가와 출판을 통한 방식으로 시도한 것이다.

우선 이번 책의 기획에서 중점을 둔 것은 정서영의 조각적 차원에 다시 주목하는 것이었다. 최근 작가가 자주 채택하는 시간과 소리, 움직임을 이용하는 작업들이 동적이고도 비물질적인 속성을 띠는 반면에, 조각은 정적이고도 물리적인 것이다. 정서영의 조각은 극도로 엄준한 조형적 구성과 형식적 요소들의 관계를 통해 집요한 형(形)의 정치를 추구한다. 작가는 다소 전통적으로 비춰질 수 있는 조각이라는 범주 내에서 조각의 한계를 넘어서고 있다. 작가 특유의 수행성이나 조각적 특이성은 최근의 퍼포먼스, 드로잉, 사운드 등의 다양한 방식에서도 여전히 관통하는 공통적이고도 근원적인 작업 언어라고 생각한다. 이러한 관점은 특히 책에 수록할 작품 이미지들을 선별하는 데 기준으로 작용했다. 즉, 조각 오브제 설치뿐 아니라 공연 형식을 띤 작업에서도 조각적 세부와 질감, 형식적 선택을 주목하게 하는 기록 이미지들을 선별해내고자 노력했다…”

“This book brings together the artwork and exhibitions of artist Chung Seoyoung from the end of the 1990s to the present. The artist, expanding from her sculpture and drawing of the 90s, has tirelessly worked over the past several years in performance, sound installations, and other media. She is an artist at the forefront of the Korean art scene whose work is indicative of the symptoms of change in what is called “contemporary art” in the Korean context. This book came about with the intention of investigating Chung’s work of the past decade and revitalizing certain elements of her art. This project, as a part of a series of curatorial projects I have carried out since 2006 focusing on one-artist-production exhibitions or performances, was this time attempted through a publication with the artist.

Above all, the focus of this book was to bring attention to the sculptural dimension of Chung’s work. Compared to her recent work utilizing time, sound, and movement— which are dynamic and immaterial in nature—her sculpture is still and physical. Chung’s sculptures persistently seek a politics of form through extreme relationships between plastic composition and formal elements. The artist, while abidingly holding on to the performative language of sculpture, exceeds the medium’s boundaries from within the category of what can be considered, for the most part, traditional sculptural work. I believe that the artist’s rigorous sculptural performativity and sculptural singularity continue to be common aspects that permeate her recent work in performance, drawing, sound, and so on. Such an understanding of the artist’s work infuenced the criteria for selecting the images of works included in this book. We have made an effort to choose not only images of object installations but also documentary images that bring attention to the sculptural details, texture, and formal decisions present in the artist’s works…”
