작가 최재은(b.1953)은 불, 공기, 식물, 땅과 같은 자연의 재료를 매개로 조각, 설치, 영상 등 다양한 매체를 넘나들며 작업을 이어오고 있습니다. 사물의 생성과 소멸, 생명의 순환을 탐구하는 그의 작업은 자연과 인간, 공간이 맺는 유기적 관계를 섬세하게 드러내며 끊임없이 변화하는 생명의 리듬을 펼쳐 보입니다. 
2026 리움 캘린더는 최재은의 오랜 관심사인 ‘숲’에서 시작합니다. 이전 작업 <이름 부르기>에서 DMZ의 멸종 위기 식물 101종의 이름을 하나씩 호명했던 작가는, 이제 식물과 인간이 이어온 공생의 이야기에 주목합니다. <우리가 처음 만났을 때>에서 식물들은 오랜 세월 땅과 빛, 바람 속에 숨 쉬며 벌, 나비, 그리고 인간과 함께해 온 이야기를 들려줍니다. 시간 속에 뿌리 내린 이 아름다운 공존의 이야기에 여러분도 조용히 귀 기울여 보시기 바랍니다. 
The 2026 Leeum Calendar begins in the forest, a realm that has long been at the heart of artist Jae-Eun Choi’s (b. 1953) practice. Working across diverse disciplines including sculpture, installation, and film, Choi engages natural elements such as fire, air, plants, and earth to explore the processes of creation and extinction, delicately revealing the organic relationships among nature, humanity, and space, and unfolding the ever-changing rhythm of life. 
In her earlier project To Call by Name, Choi invoked the names of 101 endangered plant species from the Demilitarized Zone of the Korean peninsula to highlight the fragile presence of life on the verge of disappearance. In her recent body of work, When We First Met, she employs plants to tell the stories of their coexistence with humans, as they breathed, over centuries, through earth, light, and wind alongside the bees and butterflies that surrounded them. The traces of seasons and breaths inscribed in her works invite us to listen quietly to these captivating tales of coexistence, rooted in the passage of time.
