김 크리스틴 선  
1980년 미국 캘리포니아의 한국인 가정에서 태어난 김 크리스틴 선은 현재 베를린에 거주하며 소리와 언어, 소통의 복잡성을 탐구하는 작업을 이어가고 있습니다. 작가는 음표와 악상 기호, 다이어그램, 미국 수어(ASL) 등 반복되는 소재를 통해 청각 중심 사회에서 간과되어 온 배제와 차별에 대한 문제를 드러내는 재치 있는 작업을 선보여 왔습니다.  2025년 리움 캘린더는 김 크리스틴 선의 2016년 작 <저스트 뮤직> 시리즈에 속한 드로잉 작품 열두 점을 소개합니다. 이 작품들은 영화나 TV 쇼의 배경 음악 자막을 시각적으로 표현한 것으로, 흰 종이에 오선 없이 음표와 늘임표만을 사용하여 ‘클래식 플루트 음악’, ‘광란의 피아노 연주’, ‘위층에서 들려오는 재즈 음악’ 등 열두 개의 멜로디를 보여줍니다.  악상 기호와 여백으로 묘사된 이 음악들이 여러분에게 어떤 리듬과 감정을 선사할까요? 작가가 우리에게 건넨 열두 점의 작품과 함께 풍성히 서로를 감각하고 사려깊게 대화하는 2025년 한 해가 되기를 바랍니다.

Christine Sun Kim (b. 1980, California) is an American artist of Korean descent currently based in Berlin. In her work, Kim combines humor with musical notation, infographics, and American Sign Language (ASL) to explore the complexities of sound, language, and communication. Our 2025 Calendar features twelve drawings from her Just Music series. In this series from 2016, using only musical notes and legato marks on white paper without a musical staff, Kim visually extrapolates from captions describing music in films and television shows, such as “Classical Flute Music,” “Frantic Piano Intensifies,” and “Jazz Music Upstairs.” What kind of rhythm and emotions will these melodies, written with musical symbols and the space of the page, give us? We hope Christine Sun Kim’s twelve works bring in a year of deep empathy and thoughtful conversations in 2025.
